Our veterinarians conduct thorough examinations, including vaccinations, parasite control, nutrition counseling, and more.

Importance of Vaccinations in Pet Wellness Care

Vaccinations are a crucial component of pet wellness care at Airport Animal Hospital. These preventive measures not only protect your beloved companion from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases but also contribute to the overall well-being of your pet.

Vaccinations are designed to stimulate your pet’s immune system to create antibodies against specific diseases. By vaccinating your pet, you are providing them with essential protection against a range of infectious diseases. Diseases such as rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and feline leukemia can have devastating consequences for pets. Vaccinations significantly reduce the risk of your pet contracting these illnesses.

Vaccines for dogs

  • Rabies: A vaccine to prevent rabies. Rabies can be transmitted by a bite of an infected animal. The only vaccine required by law. After the first vaccine is given, your dog will be vaccinated every 3 years.
  • Distemper (DHPP): Stands for Distemper, Hepatitis (canine adenovirus -2 and -1), Parvovirus & Parainfluenza. Puppies get a series of 3 distemper vaccines starting from 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks and then at 14-16 weeks. After the completion of this series, your pup will only need it annually.
  • Bordatella (Kennel Cough): Even though you may not board your dog at a kennel, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your pup vaccinated. Kennel cough is a virus that gets transmitted to dogs just as the common cold gets transmitted to us. Which means they can get kennel cough from pet stores, dog parks, and other public places. Kennel cough is an inflammation in your dog’s upper respiratory system that causes a honk-like cough which, if left untreated, can cause other illnesses. Most training facilities, doggie daycares, and boarding facilities require this vaccine.
  • Canine Influenza: Vaccine to help prevent the dog flu. If your dog has already received a kennel cough vaccine, they may also benefit from the canine influenza vaccine because the risk factor between both are very similar. This vaccine is especially important if your dog is often around other dogs in a group community.
  • Lyme: Lyme disease is an infectious disease carried by the black-legged tick also known as the deer tick. It is very common in New England. With tick prevention and the Lyme vaccine, your dog may have a better chance of not contracting this awful disease.
  • Leptospirosis: A bacteria spread by infected animals through soil, water, and urine. Common in wild animals. If contracted and not caught early, it can be deadly. This vaccine helps prevent leptospirosis.

Vaccines for Cats

  • Rabies: A vaccine to prevent rabies. Rabies can be transmitted by a bite of an infected animal. The only vaccine required by law. After the first vaccine is given, your cat will be vaccinated every 3 years.
  • RCP: A feline distemper vaccine that stands for Feline viral Rhinotracheitis Calicivirus Panleukopenia. Kittens receive a series of 3 distemper vaccines starting from 6-8 weeks. After the completion of this series, your cat will only need it annually.
  • FeLV: Feline Leukemia Vaccine. Cats can contract leukemia through saliva and nose secretions. Feline leukemia is a contagious and potentially fatal disease that affects cats’ immune systems. The FeLV vaccine is recommended especially for outdoor cats or those in multi-cat households where the risk of exposure is higher. Get your cat protected with the FeLV vaccine.
  • PureVax Rabies: For cats, we also offer PureVax, a safer rabies vaccine that is non-adjuvanted. This means it does not contain certain additives that can potentially cause reactions in cats. PureVax provides protection against rabies while minimizing the risk of adverse effects.

Regular vaccinations are a cornerstone of preventive care for cats, crucial for safeguarding their health and well-being against a range of preventable diseases. At Airport Animal Hospital, our experienced veterinary team emphasizes the importance of tailored vaccination schedules based on your cat’s unique characteristics. Factors such as age, lifestyle, and potential exposure risks are carefully considered to create a personalized vaccination plan. We understand that every cat is different, and our goal is to provide comprehensive protection while minimizing any potential risks or adverse reactions. Trust us to keep your feline companion healthy and happy for years to come.
